Volunteer License for Dentists/Dental Hygienists


Who May Receive a Volunteer License

A Delaware Volunteer license may be issued to a person who

  • Holds a current Dentist or Dental Hygiene license or has held a Dentist or Dental Hygiene license within the past two years in any US state or Canadian province
  • Has practiced dentistry or dental hygiene for 25 years (continuously)
  • Has completed the required hours of continuing education for the previous two years
  • Has passed the Delaware Jurisprudence Examination
  • Volunteers time in either a nonprofit dental clinic or a nonprofit dental service, and
  • Certifies that he or she will work without compensation for professional services.
  • Has no verifiable complaints on the National Practitioner Data Bank (dentist only)

Applying for Volunteer License

Submit:

  • Completed, signed and notarized Volunteer License Application
  • Verification letters from state(s) where you are now, or have ever been, licensed
  • Certificates of completion for 50 hours (dentists) or 24 hours (hygienists) of continuing education for the previous 2 years.
  • Criminal Background Report
  • Self-query from the National Practitioner Data Bank (dentist only)
  • Copy of current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification card

Note: Although no fee is charged for processing an application, all costs associated with obtaining licensure are the applicant’s responsibility.

Requirements of Licensees

Volunteer licenses are valid only for one year and must be renewed annually. The following requirements apply to all Volunteer licensees:

  • You must meet the continuing education requirements in Section 6.0 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations and renew your license annually.
  • You must work under the supervision of the dentist in charge.
  • You will be evaluated by your supervising dentist.
  • You must complete a minimum of 125 hours of volunteer dentistry per year.
  • You are not permitted to practice dentistry/dental hygiene outside of the nonprofit dental clinic or service nor practice dentistry/dental hygiene for profit.
